HRWC PROGRAM & ACTIVITY COMMITTEES

Restoration Committee

The Restoration Committee helps set priorities for watershed restoration activities (including buffer plantings, stormwater projects, and stream restoration) associated with HRWC’s annual work planning.  The committee also assists staff with review and evaluation of grant opportunities and sub-watershed priorities and makes recommendations to the board of directors. The Committee organizes 4-6 volunteer workdays annually in cooperation with the Restoration and/or Watershed Coordinators. Members are expected to assist with volunteer workdays, which may include loaning tools and equipment, recruiting other volunteers, and/or helping with planting, seeding, and project maintenance.

Lake Chatuge Committee

The Lake Chatuge Committee’s purpose is to facilitate implementation of the Lake Chatuge Watershed Action Plan.  The committee helps to set priorities for implementation activities associated with HRWC’s annual work planning.  The committee assists staff with review and evaluation of grant opportunities and sub-watershed priorities and makes recommendations to the board of directors. Members are expected to help with education events, workshops, and fundraisers associated with plan implementation.

Education Committee

The Education Committee helps to set priorities for environmental education activities (including opportunities for children, youth and adults) associated with HRWC’s annual work planning.  Members assist HRWC staff with educational events which may include set up of displays, providing refreshments, making presentations, chaperoning children and youth, etc., and in some cases may carry out activities in the community without the assistance of staff. The committee also assists staff with review and evaluation of grant opportunities and makes recommendations to the board of directors associated with future programming.

Volunteer Monitoring Committee

The Volunteer Monitoring Committee helps to set priorities for water quality monitoring activities associated with HRWC’s annual work planning.  Members assist HRWC staff with program administration, which may include ordering supplies, volunteer training, manning sample drop-off locations, data management, and insuring sample delivery to the laboratory.  The committee also assists staff with review and evaluation of grant opportunities and makes recommendations to the board of directors.

Event Planning/Fundraising Committee

The Event Planning Committee assists the organization with planning and logistics associated with fundraising events (i.e. Trout Dinner, Wine Tasting, Holman Banquet), as well as program meetings and volunteer gatherings. Members may help prepare refreshments, make arrangements for music, assist with event set-up and clean-up, and recruit volunteers for various duties during events.  Committee members will set their own meeting schedule; however, quarterly meetings are likely in order to assist with three major fundraising events and for organizational planning.

Grants Committee

The Grants Committee assists the organization in identifying and pursuing grant opportunities.  Members may canvas the internet searching for available grant opportunities, meet with HRWC staff and members of various committees to plan grant applications, and/or assist with grant writing. Much of this committee’s work could be accomplished independently with coordination via telephone and/or email.

If you are interested in volunteering to serve on one of these committees, please contact Callie Moore at cmoore@hrwc.net or call (828) 837-5414. You may also suggest a new committee for consideration by the HRWC Board of Directors!
