riparian/buffer width, vegetative protection, stability of
stream banks, flow, riffles/runs/pools, among many others. The
Visual Program also includes instruction on a cross-section

Union County
committed $2,500 in 2013 to monitor 14 sites in the Nottley
watershed, many being listed by Georgia Environmental Protection
Division (EPD) as impaired because of E. coli. This workshop
will kick-off training of volunteers to monitor these sites
using Adopt-A-Stream's bacterial monitoring program. Workshop
participants will be trained and certified in how to collect,
plate and count E. coli in water samples from area streams. All
materials and equipment will be supplied. This is a great
opportunity to be engaged and help provide information on the
health of our streams. |

Have you heard about the HRWC and wondered what the organization
does? Or maybe you’ve heard about a local stream restoration
project or the Lake Chatuge Watershed Action Plan and want to
learn more? Maybe you want to volunteer to do something to help
our environment, but you don’t know how to get involved?
Although a variety of events will take place throughout the day,
the actual meeting will be held at 4:00pm at Pavilion #3. The
meeting is a great opportunity to not only learn about our
organization, but also to give us your own input about concerns
you have related to water quality protection. Displays for
various program areas will be set up and staff and board members

The
Coalition is proud to offer this rain barrel workshop to promote
and educate residential stormwater best management practices (BMPs).
Although residential rain barrels are just a drop in the bucket,
they go a long way by encouraging folks to consider the impacts
of stormwater from their properties and to hopefully implement
BMPs to better manage it. This workshop will provide instruction
on rain barrel construction and installation PLUS you get to
take home a 55 gallon working rain barrel for only $25! |

The
Coalition has transitioned its volunteer monitoring
program, formerly part of the Volunteer Water Information
Network in North Carolina, into the Georgia Adopt-A-Stream
program. We will be conducting an Adopt-A-Stream (AAS) workshop
and will train volunteers to become quality assurance/control
(QA/QC) certified volunteers. This certification will enable
volunteer data to be submitted to the online state-wide database
accessed by everyone from educators and students to state
officials and policy makers. This data collection will continue
a long history of water quality monitoring and data collection
in the upper Hiwassee River watershed. This workshop is FREE and
open to anyone interesting in water quality issues, but we
ESPECIALLY encourage HRWC members and previous volunteers to
participate! We will have state Adopt-A-Stream Coordinators on
hand to provide information about the program, database and what
to do if you spot water quality impairment. The workshop will
cover training in chemical monitoring in the morning followed by
bacterial monitoring after lunch.
The
workshop will be held outside in an open-air pavilion followed
by “hands-on” training in the Hiwassee River. Volunteers should
bring a brown-bag lunch for a riverside picnic and comfortable
clothes they don’t mind getting a little wet or dirty. For more
information and to register (it’s FREE) please email
lakechatuge@brmemc.net
or call Lake Chatuge Watershed Coordinator, Scarlett Fuller at
(706) 970-9069. See you by the river! |
