This birding
outing will be led by long-time HRWC board member and Young
Harris College professor, Brenda Hull. Participants will meet
at Mary’s Southern Grill in Young Harris and carpool to various
sites around Lake Chatuge. We will be seeing primarily
waterfowl, but will also be looking for other birds that spend
the winter with us! Bring binoculars and a spotting scope, if
you have them; extra pairs will be available. A bird
identification guide would be good to bring along also. The
event is expected to last two hours and is free. Upon return,
several participants will have breakfast at Mary’s.
If you will
eat with the group, please plan to pay for your own meal and RSVP to the HRWC office so that we can let Mary know in advance
how many are coming:
email
info@hrwc.net or call
828-837-5414.
Outing leader,
Brenda Hull teaches courses in Biology, Ecology, Zoology, and
Field Studies at Young Harris College where she is in her
fifteenth year. Her primary professional interests lie in
the field of ecology, ethology and ornithology. She is an
avid birder and a strong supporter of HRWC’s efforts! |

HRWC will kick-off the New Year with the first
annual Holman Water Quality Stewardship Award Banquet & Silent
Auction. The purpose of the banquet is to celebrate the
relatively good water quality still being measured in the
Hiwassee River and its tributaries, while reminding us of the
critical need to act now to prevent further degradation! The
event is planned as a fundraiser; and, if successful, will begin
building funds for an endowment to help secure the coalition’s
long-term future in the upper Hiwassee River watershed.

Most of the
“development” that is currently going on in the upper Hiwassee
River watershed involves partitioning of lots, building roads
and installing utilities. Typically, lots are then
purchased by people intending to retire here or build a vacation
home at some point; the lots often sit for years before people
actually build. Additionally, the responsibility for road
maintenance in many cases lies with the landowners.
Because of these trends, most of the active erosion in the
Hiwassee River basin associated with development is occurring
associated with bad road design, construction, and lack of the
required continued maintenance by property owners.
Developers and grading contractors that attended HRWC’s last
round of sediment and erosion control workshops were most
interested in the very brief section on road building.
HRWC promised to put together a full day workshop in the future
about how to build a good private access road in the mountains.
This is it!
HRWC is again offering
this workshop in cooperation with Natural Resources Conservation
Service, Cherokee County Soil and Water Conservation
District and the NC Division of Water Quality.
Participants
will receive a free copy of The Layman's Guide to Private
Access Road Construction In The Southern Appalachian Mountains,
Second Edition (2005).
