LOWER BRASSTOWN
(February 2003)
|
|

The Lower Brasstown
project is situated approximately one mile upstream from the confluence of Brasstown
Creek and the Hiwassee River
behind
Clay's Corner
on the properties of Bill & Lillian Reagan, Clay Logan and the John
C. Campbell Folk School.
This is currently the Coalition's most downstream project along the
Brasstown Creek mainstem. The project can be viewed when crossing
the bridge on Brasstown Road near the intersection with Old 64.

Conditions of Site Prior to Project
The right bank of
Brasstown Creek downstream of the Brasstown Road bridge at Clay’s Corner
was near-vertical and eroding due to a lack of an adequate riparian
buffer. The left bank was in excellent condition with a minimum 50-foot
wooded buffer. Sloughing of the eroding right bank had the potential to
undermine buildings and two very large sycamore trees.
Instream Technologies Applied
Two rock vanes were
installed and keyed in at bankfull elevation. These structures serve to
turn flows away from the eroding right bank and realign the thalweg to
the center of the channel.
Linear Feet of Stream Restoration
300 feet
Linear Feet of Riparian Buffer Restored and/or Protected
300 feet
Buffer Vegetation
Native
trees were planted along the 50-foot riparian buffer areas
along both the John C. Campbell Folk School and Reagan
properties.
