MURPHY HIGH SCHOOL TRACK PROJECT TIMELINE

September 2008 - August 2010

 

February 2009

  • Contract with environmental consultants for bank stabilization and stormwater BMP design

  • Surveyors on site at various times

  • Put together a detailed timeline of activities and brief project partners

March 2009

  • Identify teachers/students at Murphy HS that will be involved in various phases of the project (Meeting held March 18th at 9:00am.)

  • Complete the engineering design for bank stabilization and riparian buffer restoration at Murphy HS track

  • Complete the preliminary plans for stormwater drainage/BMPs

April 2009

  • Hold volunteer workday #1  (Wednesday, April 22nd at 8:00-3:00)

  • Remove trash & debris, including dead trees

  • Remove large specimens of invasive plants such as privet, kudzu, Japanese honeysuckle and multiflora rose. [Cut stem herbicide treatments applied at this time for partial control of larger specimens.]

  • Meet with school administrators to discuss engineered plans

  • Apply for permits related to bank stabilization work

May 2009

  • Hold volunteer workday #2 (Coordinate with school-wide workday?)

  • Continue removal of invasive plants

  • Install live stakes in the banks not affected by stabilization activities

  • Restoration coordinator to apply foliar herbicide treatments for control of smaller invasives and spot check of previously treated plants to check for re-sprouting

June 2009

  • Begin implementation of the stormwater drainage/BMPs at the site

  • Avoid activities around graduation on June 13, 2009

July 2009

  • Continue installation of stormwater drainage system and BMPs, including the new parking lot

  • Begin bank stabilization work

August 2009

  • Complete stormwater BMP installation

  • Complete bank stabilization work

September - November 2009

  • Restoration coordinator to apply second round of foliar treatments specifically for control of smaller Chinese privet and Japanese honeysuckle and check for re-sprouting of previously treated areas

  • Design and install signage

  • Determine if a second application to Section 319 Program is needed for additional site work

December - February 2010

  • Hold volunteer workday #3

  • Plant 30-foot riparian buffer along approximately 1,500 linear feet of the Valley River at the Murphy HS track

March - May 2010

  • Supplement live stakes where necessary

  • Publicize completed project

June - August 2010

  • Monitor success of native vegetation in the riparian buffer, supplementing plantings when necessary

  • Hold on-site educational/informational event
