Is
your pasture in need of reseeding? Are weeds taking over or
limiting the amount of grazing available for your livestock?
Would you like to seed clover in an established hay or grass
field? Are you interested in planting wildlife mixtures?
Excess
sedimentation from erosion
is
one of the most detrimental water quality problems
we face in this area. Erosion comes from a variety of sources; one of
the sources we can address is poorly established pastures or eroding
cropland. For years the only way an established pasture could be
replanted was to disk it up and reseed. If the clover faded, there was
no way to replant. Technology has improved and newer and more efficient
methods of seeding have continued to develop.
The
Hiwassee River Watershed Coalition
purchased a no-till drill to help reduce erosion from pastures in need
of rehabilitation and from hay and cropland near streams. The drill is
being made available to farmers in the Hiwassee River watershed for whom
purchase of a drill is not economically feasible.
Peachtree Farm & Home Supply
and the Coalition struck a formal agreement in 2005 to make the drill
easier to rent and more widely available for local use. Towing the
drill requires a minimum of a ¾ ton truck and a minimum 60 hp (or
4-wheel drive) tractor. The tractor used to pull the drill must have
hydraulic hook-ups in the rear. The drill is not to be used on newly
cleared land.
To rent
the drill,
simply call (837-6638) or stop by the Peachtree Farm and Home Supply
which is located in the Peachtree Community of Murphy, NC behind the
Citgo station and near the elementary school.
$15/acre for less than 10 acres
$10/acre for more than 10 acres
$50/day minimum charge; $100
deposit
Note:
The
drill is made available by the Hiwassee River Watershed Coalition
through funds provided by the North Carolina Clean Water Management
Trust Fund. Because the funds were North Carolina tax dollars, rental
of the drill for use on land within Cherokee and Clay counties, NC will
be prioritized in the rental process. Technical assistance is available
from staff of the local Soil and Water Conservation District offices:
In Cherokee County, call 837-6417x3; In Clay County, call 389-9695.
