ALTERNATIVE SPRING
BREAK
Thanks to Michigan State
University Volunteers for a Great
Week of Work
For the
second consecutive year, a group of student volunteers from
Michigan State University spent their spring break
volunteering for the Hiwassee River Watershed Coalition. The
students were participating in an Alternative Spring Break
program offered at MSU. Alternative Spring Break is a
student organization run by undergraduates and advised by a
full time staff person from MSU’s Center for
Service-Learning & Civic Engagement.
The
volunteers helped HRWC clear non-native, invasive plants
like Chinese privet and multi-flora rose from streamside
buffer areas along previously restored reaches of Brasstown
and Little Brasstown Creeks and the Valley River. The group
also planted some trees at the Cupid Falls Park in Young
Harris and helped the Land Trust for the Little Tennessee
disassemble a collapsed bard on one of their local
properties. The group worked a total of 300 hours worth
nearly $6,000 in volunteer time!!
