Volunteers go out to assigned location on the third Saturday of every month, fill several small plastic bottles with stream water, record the air and water temperature, make notes about the weather, color, clarity and flow of the stream, and conduct a dissolved oxygen test.  After spending about 30 minutes at the site, they bring their samples to a centralized drop-off location where, schedule permitting, they might chat with fellow volunteers.  The samples are tested for a wide range of possible contaminants like suspended sediment, excess nutrients, and metals and the results are sent back to the Coalition. more details

Most of the “development” that is currently going on in the upper Hiwassee River watershed involves partitioning of lots, building roads and installing utilities.  Typically, lots are then purchased by people intending to retire here or build a vacation home at some point; the lots often sit for years before people actually build.  Additionally, the responsibility for road maintenance in many cases lies with the landowners.  Because of these trends, most of the active erosion in the Hiwassee River basin associated with development is occurring associated with bad road design, construction, and lack of the required continued maintenance by property owners.  Developers and grading contractors that attended HRWC’s last round of sediment and erosion control workshops were most interested in the very brief section on road building.  HRWC promised to put together a full day workshop in the future about how to build a good private access road in the mountains.  This is it!

HRWC is again offering this workshop in cooperation with Natural Resources Conservation Service, Cherokee County Soil and Water Conservation District and the NC Division of Water Quality. Participants will receive a free copy of The Layman's Guide to Private Access Road Construction In The Southern Appalachian Mountains, Second Edition (2005).

HRWC will kick-off the New Year with the first annual Holman Water Quality Stewardship Award Banquet & Silent Auction.  The purpose of the banquet is to celebrate the relatively good water quality still being measured in the Hiwassee River and its tributaries, while reminding us of the critical need to act now to prevent further degradation!  The event is planned as a fundraiser; and, if successful, will begin building funds for an endowment to help secure the coalition’s long-term future in the upper Hiwassee River watershed.

The first Holman Water Quality Stewardship Award will be presented at the banquet to the person(s) or group that has done the most to advance HRWC’s mission of facilitating water quality improvements in the upper Hiwassee River watershed.  Click here for details about the award and a nomination form.

PLEASE NOTE: THE DEADLINE FOR AWARD NOMINATIONS IS JULY 15, 2008
