VALLEY RIVER AT MARBLE

STABILIZATION & ENHANCEMENT

(Summer 2008)

Project Design:  Wildlands, Inc.

Primary Contractor: Cook's Trucking & Excavating

The Valley River at Marble project site is located along US 74 in Cherokee County, NC.  The project involves portions of about 7,500 linear feet of the Valley River and 3,200 linear feet along Welch Mill Creek.  Welch Mill Creek enters the Valley River within the project reach.  In 2004, Bank Erosion Hazard Index (BEHI) scores within the project reaches were 47.4 and 36.2 for Valley River and Welch Mill Creek respectively.  Large storms in the fall of that year, including the remnants of Hurricane Ivan, exacerbated problem areas and banks have continued to erode heavily.

The objectives of the Valley River at Marble project are to:

  • Reduce bank erosion and sedimentation within the project reach;

  • Improve stream stability; and

  • Enhance aquatic habitat.

This project is being funded by a grant from the NC CWMTF and is the second of three individual projects planned to be accomplished by April 2009.
